Of course they are………as the importance of cybersecurity to national security is felt, an easy source of defence advantage comes from the DIB. Countless Congressional Committee hearings have made clear that nation-state threat actors target the DIB. The United States Department of War, through its DFARS program, has made it clear that the DIB is vulnerable to nation-state espionage, data, and IP theft.
The US DIB has been contracted to secure US Defence data since 2016, through DFARS, which extends across the global DIB supply chain. Meaning that the global DIB is secure and defence data is protected.
Or is it………….no its not. Starting November 2025, the US DIB must confirm compliance with DoW security requirements under its CMMC program, or suppliers will not be awarded a new contract or option. There’s also the tricky issue of the False Claims Act to navigate across the DIB, where historical self-assessment against compliance may be challenged, as contractors will be required to provide an independent certificate of compliance from 2026.
Cybersecurity risk management, especially in the context of the DIB, is national security. People are a weak link in security, as are systems, and the security of both is critical as cyber attacks increase and AI is used as a tool to increase cyber attack frequency and complexity.
