It’s not the first of its kind AI regulation, which came from the EU with its AI Act. But it is AI regulation, as South Korea proposes its AI Act, which is a comprehensive regulation aimed at addressing governance, oversight, and assurance of corporate adoption of AI and the development of AI models. Coming into force on the 24th January 2026

The South Korean AI Act is mapped directly to the EU AI Act and published here.

With notable exceptions and specifications, including
1. Promotion System for the Sound Development of AI and the Establishment of a Foundation for Trustworthiness.
2. (Establishment of Policies for AI Learning Data, etc.
3. Support for AI Technology Introduction and Utilization.
4. Promotion of AI Convergence.
5. Establishment of Private Autonomous AI Ethics Committees
6. Expansion of Financial Resources for the Promotion of the AI Industry
7. Formulation of Policies for Establishing a Foundation for Trustworthiness for AI

There are further additions to the Korean AI Act, but there is close alignment with the EU AI Act. Demonstrating harmonisation of AI. Coming at a time when nation-states require clarity over the governance of AI and that of industry.
