Concerns were raised earlier in 2025 about the use of insecure power inverters imported from China. A further report published in December 2025 by Strider Technologies, published in The Washington Post, highlights that power inverters could be vulnerable to hacking. It is reported that a significant number of US utility providers surveyed use inverters assembled by companies with relationships with the Chinese government.

Reports from May 2025 made their way to the House of Representatives, where 50 Representatives wrote to the Commerce Secretary calling on him to block future imports of equipment used in critical infrastructure.

The EU introduced the NIS2 Directive and Cyber Resilience Act as regulations focused on CNI providers to secure their infrastructure and introduce cyber certification of internet-enabled products and services. Both aim to improve the cybersecurity of EU CNI.
