This report is the first public demonstration of the use of AI to launch autonomous cyber attacks. More concerning, it is reported China used Anthropics own Ai to launch the attacks. Simply put, a nation state used the Wests own AI. We may have turned a corner in the public use of AI to automate cyber attacks.

Irrespective of what and how it took place. If correct the use of AI and automation in offensive cyber is something that we should all be concerned about. On Friday stock markets showed their concern as cyber stocks slid.

There are few remedies for automated cyber other than defensive cyber. Cybersecurity has to shift left and become a defensive capability.

Researchers at Anthropic said they had high confidence the people carrying out the attacks were a Chinese state-sponsored group.

They said humans chose the targets – large tech companies, financial institutions, chemical manufacturing companies, and government agencies – but the company would not be more specific.

Hackers then built an unspecified programme using Claude’s coding assistance to autonomously compromise a chosen target with little human involvement.
