The UK defense industry is critical to the UK economy, for more than just defense. However, the JLR hack demonstrated the fragility of UK manufacturing.
What will be the effect on the UK defence industry of the DoD CMMC program? A program that is now a regulation and will be enforceable under CMMC (before anyone says anything, DFARS 7012 has been in place since 2017) from November 10th, 2025. Over the next 4 years, CMMC will escalate compliance to DFARS 252.204-7012 to the point that unless UK covered defence contractors have certificates of compliance, they will not be awarded DoD contracts. The UK Defences Engine for growth may start to misfire.
Defence contractors will be required to justify their NIST SP 800-171 compliance score and as a US DoD contractor found out recently. Their procurement officer questioned why a recent independent NIST evaluation was wildly different from their own evaluation.
