The UK is starting to understand the impact of cybersecurity, as the MoD reports that a third-party construction contractor may have been hacked by a Russian group, stealing documents related to 8 RAF and Naval Bases. The hack includes data from RAF Lakenheath, where the US Air Force bases F-35s. The MoD is investigating claims.

This type of hack is well-documented in the US, where US DoD third-party contractors have been hacked, revealing data on US defence facilities. The theft of personal data is unfortunate for those affected. A challenge for the MoD is the theft of construction data, as it involves national security. Knowledge of the construction of facilities enables other nations to identify what facilities are used for, what they are made out of, and what ancillary services they use.

For those more adventurous, enabling third-party online maintenance services provides direct access to facilities, demonstrated many times as far back as the Target HVAC hack.
