Why and how is the UK Government helping Jaguar? The simple fact is that the company was hacked; it may not have had the appropriate cybersecurity, network segregation, and incident response plans. This resulted in an incident affecting its global supply chain and the possible loss of jobs. A recent report highlighted that the hack caused a slowdown in UK manufacturing growth.
The big question is, what does the £1.5 billion government loan do for JLR? Should it be used to repair broken systems? Will it cover costs within the supply chain and keep people in work? As long as the shutdown lasts, any production from the supply chain will back up into warehouses.
What would $1.5 billion buy you in cybersecurity? JP Morgan is reported to spend over $600 million (2019) on cyber, and $15 billion on technology annually.
£1.5 billion sends a clear signal that the UK is the insurer of last resort for cyber and a green light for hackers. Does £1.5 billion buy you a UK cyber strategy, needed by UK industry?
