How does a digital ID scheme crack down on illegal migration? At what point in the immigration process does a digital ID prevent illegal migration? One may be being simplistic, but you get on a boat, you sail across the English Channel, and you get off the boat. You are given an ID that is used to track you. Where does a digital ID prevent migration, and why do the other 60 million UK citizens need a digital ID when they may have a passport or National Insurance Number and associated documents?
A national ID is a laudable concept, but is it required today? It may be beneficial to identify each of us for products and services. But it also cements our digital records, as it will no doubt require biometric data. Data that can be used to track every citizen, and let us not forget the UK track record for IT projects and security.
One suspects that a move for Digital ID will not make it far. One remembers the poll tax riots, and one cannot overlook the current nationalism debates.
