It’s the EUs way of saying what the US has already said. That one has to be careful when dealing with other nation state suppliers. Especially when it comes to you domestic national security.

‘The EU said that “Huawei represents materially higher risks” than other telecoms suppliers, a retort that came days after two senior US lawmakers asked Washington to review intelligence sharing with Spain because of the Huawei contract.’

Until Spain follows suit, the US government should ensure that any information shared with the Spanish government is redacted of details that should not be shared with the [Chinese Communist party].”

The Spanish move inflamed the relationship with the US. Now the EU is concerned, especially as its in the process of rolling out a suite of cybersecurity regulations under EU NIS 2, DORA, the CRA and CER. Regulations that focus on nation states management of cybersecurity risks, ICT risks and resilience. In 2024 several US congressional committees highlighted the threat of pre-positioning by nation state threat actors inside CNI and it threat to national security. Whether proven or not, it is an avoidable risk.
