An article that lays bare the cybersecurity industry, the market forces that drive cyber products and services and ultimately the ability for boards to manage cybersecurity risk.

It’s a no holes barred view of cybersecurity products that analogizes some cybersecurity products with aspects of the pharmaceutical industry where some products ‘alleviate symptoms but do not cure the complaint’.

Because of the asymmetric advantages that the bad guys enjoy, cyber security companies are never likely to solve the problem they were created to tackle. But few users can survive without them. And their investors are likely to enjoy a lavish return all the same.

It raises the question of how boards demonstrate reasonable and adequate management of cybersecurity risk, if their organisations rely solely on resolving cybersecurity as a technology not an enterprise risk management issue.
