@Thaddeus Dziekanowski, one suspects that the U.S Senate Committee on Finance took the feedback provided by the CEO of United Health on the 1st of May 2024 seriously. https://lnkd.in/eAjUC9Mu
The enclosed draft Bill proposes updates to the U.S Social Security Act to strengthen, increase oversight of, and compliance with, security standards for health information. Empowering greater oversight and assurance of the protection of health information in the wake of the United health cyber attack. The Bill makes modification to the existing text of the Social Security Act to
1. Strengthening and increasing oversight of and compliance with security standards for health information.
2. Enabling the definition of minimum and enhance security standards.
3. Introducing security risk management, reporting and audit of covered entities and associates.
4. Civil and criminal penalties for failing to comply with documentation, reporting and audit requirements.
5. Civil penalties for failing to comply with security standards and requirements for health information.
6. Covered entities to fund the oversight and enforcement activities.
7. Incentive payments to be made to Eligible hospitals and Critical Access Hospitals for the adoption of essential and enhance cybersecurity practices.
The United Health cyber incident was a wakeup call as to the effects of cybersecurity on U.S health and National Security. One wonders with a U.S election pending if the Bill will be heard.
