A great article on Cyber M&A. The cyber product market has been going through a tough time, as tech companies relied on renewals and annual support to keep revenues up during a global down turn. Are we starting to see the seeds of consolidation across the cyber tech industry, as tech vendors look to buy capabilities, sell off poor performing products and companies merge to hunt down value in the market. With to many products looking to solve a problem that many do not understand, least of all the board room.
Unfortunately the underlying challenges with the cyber are not changing, attack frequency, complexity and severity is rising and the cyber tech industry is struggling to demonstrate the value it provides to clients. Its hard to say, ‘If you spend $x on my product I will prevent cyber attacks, or reduce your cyber risk’, when many companies do not understand cyber risk, or have enough skilled internal resources to manage the cyber products they own.
One reason is that Boards are yet to be convinced of the value of cybersecurity risk management and sales are primarily driven by the CIO or CISO. With some increasingly under the cyber regulatory spot light and along with the board will have to demonstrate cybersecurity risk management, or face civil or criminal penalties.
One expects to see more consolidation, as cyber regulation starts to bite and both cyber tech and covered entities come to terms with demonstrating value, when the effects of cyber regulation are felt.
