The sophistication of this adversary-in-the-middle (AitM) threat identified by Avast is incredible. The infection chain is complex and it highlights the lengths threat actors go to, to open back doors in target companies and the challenges security professional face with managing cybersecurity. Its almost impossible to manage the cybersecurity of third party suppliers and equally difficult to manage a threat as complex as the one identified by Avast.

Avast identified North Korean hackers exploiting the updating mechanism of the eScan antivirus to plant backdoors on big corporate networks and deliver cryptocurrency miners through GuptiMiner malware.

This particular threat has been around for some time, raising a question of how many companies have been infected and to what extent? If you can drop a crypto miner, you can enter and be more creative.
