The problem for the UK Government and UK Industry is so much bigger than the come back of LockBit, or the significant rise in cyber attacks on UK firms. A UK parliamentary committee published a report in December 2023 that the UK faces significant challenges with cyber strategy, security and importantly a lack of legislative frameworks to manage cybersecurity. While UK companies will continue to face challenges from threat actors like LockBit, when they return. UK industry faces a much bigger problem, as its partners work to secure their Critical National Infrastructure providers, healthcare, defence and every other important sector, through cyber regulation. Cyber regulation that will introduce barriers to entry for companies trading in and with regulated entities and countries. The SEC Final Cyber Rule, EU NIS 2, DORA and Australia’s plans to introduce cybersecurity of corporate governance, increases the cost of UK industry trading with its partners.
While ‘SOCIETY EXPECTS ORGANISATIONS TO BE PREPARED FOR ATTACKS, PROTECT CUSTOMER DATA AND KEEP VITAL OPERATIONS RUNNING. IT WILL HOLD THOSE WHO FAIL IN THAT RESPONSIBILITY TO ACCOUNT’ there are no mechanisms in the UK to enforce such an expectation.
It is the responsibility of leaders to manage cybersecurity, its just being helped along by regulators that can no longer wait for it to happen. If we don’t change quickly we will be left behind as one discussed with U.S colleagues Romaine Marshall, Rick Rosenberry and David Smolensky this week – (https://lnkd.in/eVjBwHrD)
