In several respects the actions of the FBI and DoJ to target the PRC and Volt Typhoon is a demonstration of capability, in being able to target the group and its infrastructure, and one of necessity, as one cannot sit by and let cyber attacks prevail. The statement shows clear intent by the DoJ and FBI to focus on the PRC and its nation state threat actors.
One wonders how long it will take for the next group to spin up. A bit like the proverbial half filled balloon, you squeeze it in one place it just changes shape somewhere else.
The U.S has the resources and skills to perpetrate such actions, how many other countries can do the same, at such scale? One hopes continued collective actions continue, in the absence of public and private sector capabilities to manage cybersecurity risks.
