One wonders if the term is ‘managing’ and not ‘managed’ as the effects of the cyber attack on the British Library continue to effect its services. The Library has experienced the effects of an asymmetric cyber attack. Where the hacker likely put little effort in, at little cost, in the hope of a reasonable reward. While the Library and its customers are left to pick up the pieces.

One suspects that cybersecurity was not part of the library’s digitization strategy. The cost of cyber is significantly greater than the cost of digitization. A cost that is greater after a cyber attack that before. One hopes the Library’s cyber insurance policy will cover much of the incident response costs. Unfortunately the Library will have to use its reserves to baseline its cybersecurity and budget to manage cyber going forward. The remediation cost will be a bitter pill and one expects the costs will be greater post incident than pre, as is invariably the case.
