A perspective on a speech given by the UK defense secretary on the need for the UK defense industry to adopt approaches to resilience and an approach for co-development and co-production capabilities. That raises the question of cybersecurity and the application of cybersecurity across the defence industry base to ensure that ‘A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats’ approach is adopted.

The U.S has been pushing a cybersecurity strategy under DFARS since 2017. A strategy that its own defense contractors have found difficult to implement effectively and one that its partners have struggled with. A strategy without which the resilience of the defense industry base is hard to resolve, especially if a broader strategy of co-development and co-production is adopted.

For the UK, the December 2023 report ‘A hostage to fortune: ransomware and UK national security’ details the challenges the UK faces with managing cybersecurity nationally.
