It is positive that international government agencies have been able to act against the group known as ALPHV and BlackCat. A group that has demonstrated a capability to attack 1,000s of companies across the globe. Of course its a win in respect of demonstrating that Agencies can target threat actors, but one suspects the Christmas party will be short lived, unless Western Agencies can prevent ALPHV and threat actors like ALPHV from spinning up new services. Which they cannot.
One concern is cybersecurity risk management across the public and private sector is not mature enough to take on well resourced, technically competent and well funded threat actors such as ALPHV. Actors that are likely inside public and private sector firms. Baiting the bear so to speak, may lead to collateral damage, but that does not mean governments can let threat actors continue to disrupt the public and private sector.
Have cyber attacks been proven to disrupt CNI, yes, while the threat of ransomware is significant a bigger threat remains. What do you do when the threat actors decide they have enough money and want to destroy files rather than encrypt them?
Will there be further consequences of actions in managing cybersecurity across our public and private sectors in the short term? As Iran is managing today with its petrol pump outage and ALPHV is threatening.
