The Israel linked hacking group ‘Gonjeshke Darande’ has claimed responsibility for disabling gas pumps in Iran, in what is a geopolitically motivated attack. The attack comes at a time of high geopolitical tensions in the region and if the claims are correct the attack has been effective in shutting down some 70% of petrol pumps across the country.
Israel, along with the U.S have a history’s of targeted infrastructure attacks that date back to Stuxnet in 2010 that targeting Iran’s Nuclear enrichment program. Iran and Israel have a history of cyber ‘tit for tat’ with both nations targeting each other infrastructure.
But the latest attack by Israel on Iran’s ability to deliver petrol to motorists on this scale is a step above ‘tit for tat’. A demonstration of the potential effects of a cyber attack on critical national infrastructure.
