Geopolitical cyber has always been there, its just becoming more obvious. Russian hackers appear to be behind recent attacks targeting war crime investigations. That led to the U.S and UK sanctioning Russian hacker for a sustained espionage campaign targeting Critical National Infrastructure (https://lnkd.in/ebbFveru)
The challenge we face is that these groups appear, then disappear, then reappear again. It’s ‘whack-a-mole’ with an asymmetric risk. A risk that comes from anywhere, to anywhere, with little chance of shutting down the threat actors when they are based on their home turf.
Because of the UK’s support for Ukraine we are in a state of ‘grey warfare’ with Russia; and the Russians will use every means at their disposal to attack British interests short of open conflict, Richard Dearlove, the former head of Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service, or MI6, told Reuters.
