The U.S started a crack down on IP theft several years ago. Focusing in on chip design, manufacturing, distribution and sales amongst other industry sectors. The challenges is when you squeeze the balloon things have a tendency to find their own way. As this article points out for NXP the Dutch chip manufacturer, as it appears that a Chinese hacking group called ‘Chimera’, went undetected for over 2 years.
Chimera seems to have a soft spot for Chip manufacturers, allegedly targeting a Taiwanese chip manufacturer in 2020/21. The Chimera APT is a professional group whose objective ss the exfiltration of intellectual property, such as documents on integrated circuits (IC), software development kits (SDKs), IC designs, source code. In this case that belonging to NXP.
It does not take a leap of faith to understand where this data ends up.
