The MGM and Casers hacks was well publicised over the summer, causing $100million to MGM, a $15 million ransomware payment by Caesars and regulatory reporting. However could the hackers be more home grown than international, as the hackers were ‘known’ by Federal agencies and some based in the U.S. Were the FBI were investigating the hacking group in 2022?

A further challenge highlighted is the reluctance for some companies effected by the hacking group to come forward to the authorities. That both hinders the investigation and denies the authorities potentially useful information that could be used to stop attacks.

Security analysts tracking the breaches, meanwhile, have found a range of victims across nearly every industry – starting with telecoms and outsourcing firms to healthcare and financial service companies.

One wonders therefore if more questions will be asked about the attacks against MGM, Caesars and others, and if they could have been stopped?
