A very serious incident is unfolding in Australia as DP World shuts down port operations due to a cyber attack. Thanks for sharing Olaf Classen.

Container terminals in Sydney , Melbourne, Brisbane and Fremantle have been affected, the intrusion was detected at 5pm on Friday and operations were shut down. The Australian government has called a crisis meeting to discuss the incident, due to the serious implications for goods-in and out of the country.

For an Island such as Australia, attacking port operations demonstrates the fragility of maritime operations and logistics to cyber attack. This is the second known major port cyber incident in 2023, following a cyber attack that shut down Japan’s largest port Nagoya in July.

“The company took immediate action, including disconnecting the internet connectivity, which stopped any ongoing unauthorized access to their network,” DP World said in a statement late Saturday. With the effects likely to be felt for several days.

It is a further incident affecting Australian CNI in the past 12 months. demonstrating the impact of cyber attacks on Telecoms, Financial services and now maritime operations and logistics. Coming at the same time as ICBC was hacked in the U.S possibly affecting the 30 year U.S Bond auction, highlighting the escalating cyber threats.

The EU in moving quickly to address cybersecurity regulation of CNI, including the maritime infrastructure. Requiring the public and private sector address cyber risk management and hold boards to account.
