The U.S Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has released a Hardware Bill of Materials Framework (HBOM), for Supply Chain Risk Management (SCRM). The framework provides a baseline document for organizations to identify and name assets across their supply chains. Including the nomenclature for a consistent and repeatable naming convention for assets across their suppliers.

Many larger suppliers will have a naming convention through their ERP systems, but the HBOM provides a consistent convention of all suppliers to articulate the hierarchy of their products, across their supply chain. The purpose of which is to enable product and service vendors highlight supply chain risks, including software and hardware. Enable the documentation of a Software Bill of Materials(SBOM) in line with hardware, critical in identifying the use of open source, in house and outsourced code. Important for cybersecurity risk management.
