This is an important development for U.S Attorney’s on Cybersecurity by the America Bar Association. Given their members role as internal and external counsel to corporate America.
The American Bar Association’s (ABA) House of delegates passed a trio of cyber related resolutions. The most important of which in ones opinion, was Resolution 608. “providing the policy needed for the ABA president to speak on cyber issues and the ABA to advocate in Congress, ..Urging Congress to pass legislation establishing cybersecurity as a legal duty for organizations.
Why is this important? It’s a demonstrates the ABA understands the issues that Cybersecurity places on the U.S legal profession and corporate America. In a move co-sponsored by the Standing Committee on Law and National Security; the Center for Human Rights; and the Section of Environment, Energy and Resources. The ABA is sending a message, and with over 1.3 million Lawyers in the U.S (2022), sitting in Capitol Hill, district courts (the trial court), circuit courts, and the Supreme Courts of the United States, lawyers are a powerful lobby when galvanized? The recent SEC cyber ruling, ONCD National Cyber Strategy and effects of EU cyber regulation on trade, may inform other Bar Associations to press the importance of cyber on corporate America.
Other resolutions passed: Resolutions 609 encourages lawyers to stay on top of new and emerging technologies, urging them to protect the data, products and systems of their firms, clients and vendors. Resolution 610Â encourages law schools to offer cybersecurity courses, a nod to the cybersecurity risks that new lawyers will face.
