One has to ask the question of Defensive cybersecurity maturity here in the UK. We see many nations moving ahead, addressing cybersecurity risk management through regulation. The UK government issued the enclosed report on the implementation of its Cyber Essential program. That makes for interesting reading.
As of May 2023, 35,433 organizations in the UK were certified to Cyber Essentials or Cyber Essentials plus. Which is not a small number, until you put this in the context of how many companies are registered with Companies house. (https://lnkd.in/e6Jv-YQN) While not a perfect figure 4.5 million effective companies of all sizes, were registered as of the end of March 2022. With 99% of organizations in general being SMBs/ SMEs, Cyber Essentials has a way to go, to cover effected companies.
Other nations are driving cybersecurity regulations that will effect UK industry (EU NIS, DORA, the SEC Proposal). Regulation that sets cyber standards for market participation and requires oversight, assurance and attestation of cybersecurity by boards. One hopes that the take up of cybersecurity oversight and assurance improves, or the UK actively addresses defensive cyber regulation.
