The recent reported challenges with data security and DoD Cloud, along with the release by the GOA of a cloud security audit, appear from the outside to have created concerns within the DoD over cloud security. While one hopes that there is no significant breach of data, cloud security is a concern for both the DoD and private sector.
The DoD is expected to adopt FISMA and has issued DoDi 8510.01 and 5000.90. That govern the the adoption of the Risk Management Framework (RMF) and its application across the Defense Acquisition System (DAS), that we discuss in our 2021 paper ‘FISMA, RMF and DoDi 5000.90’, enclosed.
In the recent case one hopes that the AO was successful in evaluating the appropriate risks for cloud security, and the adoption of the shared responsibility model ahead of signing the ATO. With an annual spend approaching $1.2 Bn for cloud and the need to secure DoD data in the cloud, these processes and standards are critical for securing DoD data.
For those that are interested, we have a video on DoDi 5000.90. Reach out if you would like a copy.
