The reporting of the data breach by Nissan this week raises questions over the time it took for the company to report the incident. A breach that is not without precedence for NISSAN. The recent breach related to an insecure database that was provided to a third party software developer, who reported the data breach to Nissan North America in June 2022. Nissan confirmed the breach in September 2022 and reported the incident to the Office of the Maine Attorney General(AG) this week.
One suspects both the AG and FTC may have an interest in the breach. It raises questions over the time it took to inform the authorities of the breach, with little legal precedence being set recently over data breach management, and changes in cyber regulations in the pipeline setting a different compliance tone.
