2022 has seen a definite shift in cyber from logical to physical, with the Ukraine Russia conflict providing a reason for hackers to test their capabilities. The link between cyber attacks on heath services and mortality is starting to develop.
As a consequence of cyber attacks on hospitals are complex, data breaches are only one by product of a successful ransomware attack. Loss of patient records, inoperable facilities and equipment, access to medication, real time diagnostics, staff records, payroll are a few of the implications.
With debates on cyber insurance continuing and cyber regulation developing one wonders how long it will be before the legal profession catches up and starts to focus in on the responsibilities of the healthcare profession as it relates to cybersecurity risk management and ‘threat to life’ events such as ransomware?
