The ICO has highlighted complacency over cybersecurity as a major factor in the failure of UK businesses to manage cyber. We often hide behind Fear Uncertainty and Doubt (FUB) for what is sometime used as a reason for holding off on making decisions, and cybersecurity is no exception.

However, there is plenty going against cybersecurity.
1. Cyber is fast becoming a regulated requirement, with both the U.S and EU working to regulate board compliance for cyber risk management.
2. UK cybersecurity standards are what can only be described today as woefully inadequate.
3. International cyber regulations already imposes cyber requirements far greater than those the UK has adopted. Proposed U.S and EU regulations will add to this significantly.
4. The insurance industry is struggling to underwrite cyber risks. Organisations can expect to have to comply to cyber standards if they want coverage.
5. The UK does not have the experienced resources to implement cyber security on the scale that both the risk dictates and the regulation sets out.

Unfortunately this is not a FUD debate, complacency may not be a rational reason for regulatory compliance.
