We cannot underestimate the importance of the appointment of the secretary-general of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)s in determining the future of the internet, a vote that will take place next week. The ITU develops worldwide technical standards for the internet, and sets the standards not only for the infrastructure of the internet but also the applications on which it is built. With the potential of focusing the internets very structure and design, putting governments—not users—in the drivers seat.  

‘China, which outnumbered the U.S. two-to-one in ITU telecommunications committee leadership positions as of 2020, has already used the ITU to advance its Digital Silk Road agenda’

‘Thats why top U.S. leaders from President Biden to Secretary of State Antony Blinken have taken an unusual level of interest in this weeks ITU election, coming out strongly in support of Bogdan-Martin, who currently leads the ITUs Development Bureau, and her platform of A Trusted, Connected Digital Future.”  That the United States is even running a candidate at all speaks to the urgency of the threat’

This is one to watch as it could lead to a segregation of the internet between East and West and impact those applications that run across it.
