Working as the former European Head of Ops Risk and Cyber for a Japanese corporate bank I learnt allot about Japanese culture, passion, quality, vision and mission. The Japanese steadfast focus and dedication to the mission, meeting targets and working to the highest possible levels of quality and an absolute zero tolerance to errors. That at the time of heightened regulatory oversight impacted agility, flexibility and innovation.
Agility, flexibility and innovation are key characteristics for cybersecurity risk management, providing the ability to evaluate the long term impact of cyber and set a strategic vision. That in the case of the regional geopolitical tensions looks to create challenges for Japan, as demonstrated in the enclosed article. While these challenges are not Japans alone, the country plays a crucial role in the APAC region. That makes their cybersecurity maturity an sovereign asset and an important strategic imperative.
There is a focus on the need for a national cyber defense strategy to strengthen Japans national cybersecurity across the private sector and counter increased offensive cyber activity from threat actors. To improve cyber education, train defensive cyber capabilities and learn the lessons of partner nations as they move these programs forward. That many of Japans partner nations are working to address through cyber legislation, regulation and regulatory enforcement.
The defense sector has been singled out for concern. At a time when the U.S is looking to improve cybersecurity through the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QSD) process, the U.S DoD requires the management of DFARS and CMMC cybersecurity compliance and the SEC is looking to implement a cybersecurity risk management proposal. That requires cybersecurity risk management oversight, assurance and attestation to high cybersecurity standards and quality.
Cybersecurity strategy, compliance and regional harmonization is more critical today than ever.
