The EU and US have reached ‘in principle’ an agreement on Transatlantic data privacy. The statement recognises the importance of data as a mechanism for international trade, enabling the $7 Trillion economic relationship between the US and EU, more than any other trading block.

The in principle agreement covers
1. Strengthen the privacy and civil liberties safeguards governing U.S. signals intelligence activities;
2. Establish a new redress mechanism with independent and binding authority; and
3. Enhance its existing rigorous and layered oversight of signals intelligence activities.
