The news broke over the weekend, SolarWinds share price dropped about 17%, so the markets have voiced their sentiment for the time being. But it is no where near over, we’re going to be talking about this hack for a very long time. Up their with the NSA(2016), FireEye(2020), NotPetya and WannaCry(2017).
The SolarWinds hack is something completely different from what we know. For those in the cyber community it is a game changer on an unprecedented scale and for those of you who are not. You should pay attention and for a few reasons.
1. The compromise had been going on for some time, maybe upto 6 months. Nothing new with that, but it was inside Federal Agencies.
2. The hack looks like to have come from SolarWinds code compromised months ago.
3. The US is one of the most cyber aware and adept nations globally, along side the Russians and Chinese.
4. We may not know what was actually compromised.
5. The use and control of core software within sensitive environments, the segregation of networks and good old air gaps will be back on the table.
7. Cyber as a defensive weapon, well proven. Who needs bombs and bullets?
8. It’s not good enough to have all those cyber solutions. Monitoring and acting on what’s going on and by whom is important
It is not easy, cyber security.
