A great perspective on the changes being adopted in the US for supply chain risk and security. The balancing act which companies and government must content with if they are to apply appropriate cyber security controls. Whilst managing the costs of compliance and the costs of contracts against profits. Another point raised is one of US competitive advantage and will the application of these regulations affect the rate of development of innovation.
I’m not a fan of these types of argument as I believe that companies should apply the appropriate cyber security controls, to protect shareholder value and governments have a duty to protect their citizens. Having key defence IP stolen and used by your adversaries is not conducive to this goal.
However economics is a valid commercial argument, as is the need to secure IP which you have spent the money to develop which could be turned against you. Saying that companies have had more than 3 years to comply with DFARS regulations and put in place the necessary controls.
