Hacking is a complex business. Even more so when public services like law and order are hacked, then data is published online. Maine’s Information and Analysis Center, an agency run by the state police and the Maine Emergency Management. One which collects, analyses and shares intelligence between the federal government and state and local agencies. Had a significant number of documents published online, following a recent hack. This follows the publishing of 269Gb of information by a group called ‘Distributed Denial of Secrets’, stolen from police departments across America.

Attacks like this puts agencies between the proverbial rock and a hard place. On one side providing protection to citizens, on the other reaching a balance on what is a reasonable data-set to collect for the protection of those citizens. Data which is also so sensitive its protection is a priority.
