A report well worth a read. Just In Time, the manufacturing process which ensures that we get what we want at an economic price has many benefits in efficiency, productivity and timeliness. But it has drawbacks; if things don’t arrive at the right place and on time then production stops. Globalization has also delivered many opportunities, facilitating goods and services to be produced and delivered from economic centers of excellence to customers on a global scale.
These two activities have helped create a highly tuned global machine for society, which is well enshrined into our daily lives, getting what we want, when we want it. But what happens if this machine stops? 10 of the largest ports globally are in Asia, facilitating the transportation a significant amount of global trade.
If in the worst case these ports were to be impacted by a cyber attack it is estimated that the global impact could be as high at $110Bn. This is unlikely. however Asia has cyber issues. Even if a few ports were to be impacted it would cause a ripple across the globe and markets don’t like uncertainty.
Lloyd’s Chief Executive John Neal is quoted. “With the increasing application of technology and automation, these risks will become even more acute
