In my experience I agree with the figures, that on average anywhere between 60% – 75% of the data within an organisation is unstructured. Some call it dark data, another term which doesn’t help demystify data management or security. But all that data which has no structure within an organisation is important and critical corporate IP.

Unstructured data is the hardest data to manage, it’s the data which sits on shared drives, in email vaults, on the hard drives with no owner, everyone has forgotten. It’s the files which are left behind when an employee leaves, or the data no one knows what to do with following an acquisition or sale. Importantly it maybe personal data, or the passwords in spreadsheet on logical drives everyone has forgotten about, when departments merge.

Regulations like GDPR, CCPA or PCI-DSS require a knowledge of PII or credit card data across a company. Which is the time to find the skeletons in the closet and bury them appropriately, AKA clean everything up and bake the right data management policies into the organisation.

If not it’s something which will come back and haunt and maybe cost through the usual cyber costs like brand and reputation, fines and cleanup.
