All the trends are moving in the right direction, depending on what you want the outcome to be. However I have to say that some of the figures need closer examination, the problem with averages, is they account for the big and the small, weighted on the volume of each.
With advances in the sophistication of cyber threats and the subsequent impact they have, the slow adoption by boards of cyber, the transition CISO’s are having to make from cyber security to cyber risk management (there is a big difference), the changes in the regulatory environment (increases in class action law suits) and the direction of travel associated with fiduciary risk. Its no wonder the average costs of a cyber breach is rising. Some say the figure is around $1 – $2Mn, others $150Mn. It’s clear its going to be closer to the larger figure than the smaller, just look at impact of NotPetya, Merck ($900Mn) and Mearsk ($300Mn).
Cyber spend is increasing, but I fear, with the lack of qualified and skilled cyber security resources, part of this spend will simply fall into a black hole of ‘new toys’, without the teams to manage them appropriately.
The impact of cyber crime will keep rising and that’s before digital, driver-less cars and IOT kick in.
