Open, honest, simple and factual communication to board members and senior execs is critical to cyber security success. It’s a complex risk, which impacts the top and bottom line if not managed appropriately.

Boards like things simple, but I don’t believe we can simplify such a complex suite of risks, with a ‘Yes or No’ answer to cyber security. Its the good old asymmetric risk conversation, how does anyone protect themselves against the 1 in a 1000,000.

Boards only understand this when they have a breach. Then look at the CISO and say, you said ‘Yes’ we were secure. The CISO then says you wanted a simple ‘Yes or No’ answer. If I said ‘No’ I’d lose my Job, but to say ‘Yes’ was going to cost you $Mns. It’s critical therefore that we have open, honest, simple and factual cyber risk management conversations at the board table, for everyone’s sake. Least of all the customer and shareholder.
