One person’s ‘heartbeat’ is another person’s opportunity to track a device.

One person’s ‘heartbeat’ is another person’s opportunity to track a device. The fact that there were any communications into or out of the system, that were not supposed to be there, is a concern. More so for weapon systems, and any communications with a weapon system should be well understood.

This is no one’s fault, but it does highlight the need for weapon system manufacturers to ensure that they have a full understanding and control of their supply chain. An assurance of security is not security; unfortunately, into todays digitial world, security requires a full evaluation of digital systems from chipsets upwards. Every single component requires mapping and a risk assessment done across the entire hardware and software Bill of Materials.

While we wait for the UK Government to confirm its next round of security innovation funding (https://lnkd.in/eCsdgjkv) from the National Protective Security Authority, it’s worth recognising that when it is signed off, tech startups could secure part-funding to have an evaluation of their security. That may have highlighted the need to consider hardware and software BoM security and testing.
