AI is being driven hard into one of the most austere professions, that is, the legal profession. With AI start-ups developing platforms that challenge the foundation of the legal profession. A profession based upon knowledge, information, skill, and experience.

The challenge for lawyers is not AI adoption or systems development. It’s the ability to deliver quality, accurate output, and for AI platforms to assure and manage risk that naturally occurs during the legal process. With reports in the Times that the UK Bar Standards Board is reviewing 20 reports of Hallucinated Authorities.

Legal AI platforms need to ensure that they have the necessary guardrails to reduce the effects of AI making-up responses, and ensure that there is a human in the loop to validate outputs. That effectively requires lawyers to maintain manual quality assurance of the accuracy of the AI output.
