The Australian Securities and Investment Commission is calling for urgent action as AI accelerates cyber threats.

It is a message that everyone can agree with. Recent updates from AI providers demonstrated rapid developments in AI offensive capabilities, with tools such as Mythos automating the cyber kill chain with increasing levels of accuracy, speed, and sophistication.

The message from ASIC is very important. We are approaching 1 minute to midnight, as frontier AI models are developing quicker than we can manage. They are having a big impact on cybersecurity and are accelerating the kill chain. To a backdrop of generally low cyber maturity, a lack of knowledge, skills, and resources

However important the message on cybersecurity given by government agencies such as ASIC, the messages almost always fall on deaf ears. The reality is that while we see cyber communications made and cyber regulations passed, they invariably fall by the wayside, unnoticed or ignored. It is only until an organisation suffers a breach that the reality of cyber hits home. However important the cyber and AI message is. It is time for government agencies to back messages and communications with action. Action that invariably requires sanctions and penalties to focus the mind.

One’s own experience in building AI cyber assurance platforms, seeing firsthand AI reasoning develop at such a pace, quite frankly, scares me.

Cybersecurity and AI are national, economic, and corporate security.
