Now here’s an interesting development. Is OpenAI building a consulting business, or is it leveraging AI to support consulting partners in improving their consulting offering? Are the consultant partnering with OpenAI, as they have seen their moat reduce considerably, to the point that what was once a moat has turned into a dry river bed, within a matter of a few years?
But here is the issue with AI, and it’s centred around the knowledge-data paradigm. AI has been great at consuming a lot of data and some knowledge, but what about the knowledge that it has not consumed and the data that it’s not able to translate into knowledge, yet? The challenge with AI and consulting is that once you strip back the layers of the non-value-add, but chargeable, activity that anyone can now do at scale. You’re left with the issue of finding the knowledge within AI and turning that into value-added and billable services.
As has been discussed, AI boils down to Trust and being able to deliver services from trusted sources. Trust comes from the understanding that you can add value, and in the case of AI, that comes from the rapid development and use of knowledge. Knowledge that AI has to consume and create if it is to be effective.
