Thing is, he’s not wrong. Lean manufacturing should be a prerequisite for leveraging AI, and here’s why.

While AI copes with unstructured data, it has problems with hallucinations that are attributed in part to a lack of guardrails and structure. Lean, and Six Sigma for that matter, provide clearly defined processes, efficient processes, structure, and measurability. All very useful stuff for AI that reasons better when cause and effects are well known.

There is an old adage in Six Sigma and Lean: ‘Automating crap processes only means you make more crap quicker’. When you apply AI to a crap process, the outcome is more crap quicker, or more hallucinations. AI in the main relies on probabilistic reasoning, and that’s cause and effect.

So, dust off the Kaizen, Poka-Yoke, and DMAIC.
