I do struggle with this. It raises so many red flags about cybersecurity, national security, and governance. We live in a polarized world, one where cybersecurity is a direct threat to national security, and we still believe that cyber threat actors care and that we can find them.

More concerning is that our political leadership believes a solution for cyber is to fine hostile actors. I will be publishing an article on the UK Cyber Resilience Act, highlighting why cyber is the hardest risk and biggest risk for UK industry to manage, and why the only approach to UK cyber risk management is defensive. In line with cyber regulation that is already imposed on UK industry by the US and EU regulators.

US and EU regulations are going to have a higher cost impact and do more to change the dial on UK industry cyber compliance than the government will ever leverage against hackers. The US DoW CMMC program will have a bigger impact on the UK Defense Industry than the cyber regulations the UK can muster.

Our industry will get penalised for its compliance before any hackers get fined, and you can identify UK contractors, you won’t find threat actors. As this article demonstrates.
