The new MI6 Chief has said, ‘We are operating in space between peace and war’.

The presentation by Blaise Metreweli, the new head of MI6, makes for an informative and sobering discussion. At a time when the effect of cyber resilience on the UK economic security was demonstrated by this year’s attack on JLR and Marks and Spencer.

Cyber is a threat to national and economic security. The unfortunate truth is that cyber is a domain of operation within hybrid warfare, and a domain where everyone plays their part. The public and private sectors represent significant components of the complex attack surface.

Ms Metreweli called on her intelligence officers to master technology, not just in our labs, but in the field, in our tradecraft…….We will become as comfortable with lines of [computer] code as we are with human sources, as fluent in Python as we are in multiple languages.

They also need to consider how the rest of UK Plc gets to grips with technology and cybersecurity to protect UK National and economic security.
