Thank you, Faisal Khan.
When we wrote our papers and education programs for Board governance of cyber risk, we were fortunate to have read ‘How the Marine Corps Combat Hunter Program Can Save Your Life’, by Patrick Van Horne and Jason A. Riley. Who we credit with helping shape our thinking about board management of cyber risk. A book every executive should read if they want to manage and govern cyber risk.
Patrick and Jason’s book and programs were taught to US Marines as the basis of ‘situational awareness in combat, and how to think ‘Left of Bang’ and proactively manage mission risk and save lives. We transposed this thinking into several papers and education programs for Board Room Governance of Cyber Risk Management, Left of Bang.
Ironically, ‘Left of Bang’ has been implemented by every instance of cybersecurity regulation published by every global regulator. Cyber regulation shifts/ transfers boardroom cyber risk management away from incident response and cyber insurance, to a regulatory requirement for the management of risk, Left of Bang into the boardroom.
Cyber risk management is not a nice-to-have, managed through cyber insurance, but a regulatory requirement with civil and criminal penalties that boards have to demonstrate the governance, oversight, and assurance of.
