Australian legal regulators have handed down a penalty to a lawyer in Victoria who did not verify his case list, following his use of AI. He has been stripped of his ability to practice as a principal lawyer.
The Lawyer became the first in Australia to face professional sanctions for using AI in a court case. The case in question related to a dispute between a married couple. The solicitor submitted cases that could not be identified by the court. The response from the solicitor was contrite, acknowledging he did not know how AI worked.
There are more cases to follow in Australia; case law around the legal use of AI is building. Our own experience of using AI in regulatory compliance has demonstrated there is a significant difference between using a General LLM and the use of domain-specific models. General LLM cannot be trusted when complex domain knowledge and experience are required. Domain-specific AI is required that contains domain-specific information and domain knowledge, skills, and experience. To interpret information correctly.
