Great quote ‘ We are winning every battle, but losing the war.’
An update on Scattered Spider, reportedly behind cyber attacks in the UK and attacks across the US. The report highlights the relationship between Scattered Spider, Russian threat actors and demonstrates that while all intentions to remove the cyber threat are laudable. The game of whack-a-mole cyber continues with the group re-appearing stronger and more focused.
Cyber crime is evolving with nation state threat actors working with groups like scattered spider. The frequency and severity of cyber attacks shows no signs of slowing down, its increasing year-on-year. Nation states work hard to contain cyber groups; but as demonstrated with Scattered spider, offensive and defensive programs aimed at trying to contain hacking groups, do not work.
The pace and volume of cyber attacks will only increase until such time as governments address national cyber defense; until boards understand the cyber threat to their companies; until there’s whole of society approaches to managing cyber risk; until there are carrots and sticks on the table to incentivise public and private sector cybersecurity risk management.
History shows you cannot win against a threat you cannot find; where there is little recognition of the threat; have limited resources to affect change, and have limited defenses against. It’s a battle society is not winning.
